When Is the Best Time for Braces?

The teen years are the sweet spot for orthodontic treatment. By around age 12, most permanent teeth have come in, but the jaw is still growing and the bone supporting the teeth is still soft. That combination is exactly what Dr. Rodney Torres needs to move teeth efficiently.

For most teens, the ideal window is ages 11 to 15. Treatment is often faster than it would be a few years later. Recovery between adjustments is quicker. And there's plenty of time to finish before high school graduation or college.

Your teen's first visit is always a free smile exam. We'll take a digital scan, walk through every option, and give you a clear plan before you commit to anything.

The Right Time, the Right Approach

A few things line up during adolescence that make treatment work well: biology, timing, and a teen who can actually follow through.

The Right Window

By around age 12, most permanent teeth have come in but the jaw is still growing and the bone is still soft. Teeth move faster now than they ever will again.

More Options Than Ever

Traditional metal braces, tooth-colored ceramic braces, and Invisalign Teen clear aligners. Dr. Torres helps you pick based on your teen's lifestyle and goals.

Built-in Cooperation

Teens are old enough to brush carefully, wear aligners the recommended hours, and show up for adjustments. That keeps treatment on schedule and often makes it shorter.

They're Not Alone

Most of their friends are either in treatment or just out of it. Braces and aligners are a normal part of teen life, not something to feel self-conscious about.

Three Ways to Straighten a Teen's Smile

Most teens are candidates for any of these three. Dr. Torres will tell you honestly which one will work best for your teen's case, lifestyle, and budget.

The classic, and the most affordable.

Metal Braces

Stainless steel brackets and wires bonded to each tooth. Metal braces handle the widest range of cases and are usually the most budget-friendly option. Today's brackets are smaller and more comfortable than the ones your parents wore.

Good for:
  • Most cases, from simple to complex
  • Families looking for the most affordable option
  • Teens who like swapping out colored bands every visit

Ceramic Braces

Tooth-colored brackets work exactly like metal braces but blend in with your teen's smile. The trade-off: ceramic costs a bit more than metal and can stain if your teen drinks a lot of coffee or curry-heavy meals. The wires are still there, but the brackets nearly disappear.

Good for:
  • Teens who feel self-conscious about metal brackets
  • Cases that need braces (not aligners) but want a subtler look
  • Treatment plans where compliance with aligners would be tough

Invisalign Teen

A series of clear custom aligners that move teeth without brackets or wires. Each tray is worn for about a week before swapping to the next. Invisalign Teen includes blue compliance indicators that fade as the aligners are worn, so we (and you) can tell if they're being worn the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day.

Good for:
  • Mild to moderate cases (Dr. Torres will tell you honestly)
  • Athletes who don't want brackets during contact sports
  • Teens who can stick to a routine and not lose their trays

Common Questions About Teen Orthodontics

How long does teen orthodontic treatment take?
+
Most teen treatment runs 12 to 24 months. The exact length depends on how complex the case is and which option you choose. With Invisalign Teen, staying on schedule depends on wearing the aligners consistently. Dr. Torres will give you a clear timeline at the free smile exam.
Can my teen still play sports with braces?
+
Yes. We'll fit a custom orthodontic mouthguard for any contact or helmet sport (football, hockey, lacrosse, basketball). A few teens who play heavy-contact sports prefer Invisalign Teen so they can take the aligners out during games. Either way, sports keep going.
What foods does my teen need to avoid with braces?
+
With braces: skip hard, sticky, or chewy foods that can pop a bracket or get stuck in the wire. Popcorn kernels, hard candy, ice, caramel, gum, and whole apples (cut them up instead). With Invisalign Teen there are no food restrictions, since the aligners come out for meals.
How often are appointments?
+
Braces: adjustments every 4 to 8 weeks. Invisalign Teen: check-ins every 6 to 10 weeks, plus aligner swaps at home about every week. We do our best to schedule around school and sports.
Do you accept Medicaid for orthodontic treatment?
+
Yes. We accept Medicaid plans alongside most major dental and orthodontic plans. At your free smile exam, our financial coordinator verifies your benefits and gives you a written estimate before you commit. Most families combine insurance with our interest-free in-house payment plans or CareCredit financing.
